WBFH broadcasts from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland!

Anyone who has attended high school would know, field trips are among the most-welcomed diversions of the school year. It’s the chance to leave the books and lectures behind to experience the world first-hand. Some students go to museums, some to science centers; others to concerts and the like. When WBFH goes on a field trip, things go differently. Not being content to take the staffers out of state for just any field trip, Pete Bowers and Randy Carr took this year’s group to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio. The purpose? To see the sites and do a little broadcasting.

The Biff Buzz
(or news about the Radio Station)

All ten WBFH sStaff students and the three WBFH managers recently attended the annual conference of the Michigan Association of Educational Broadcasters called the Share-a-thon. The conference was held November 12 at the Henry Ford Community College in Dearborn. The M.A.E.B. is made up of high school and college radio stations in Michigan. Other member stations attending this year included Plymouth, Novi, Southfield, Avondale, Warren, and Kalamazoo.

The conference started with a tour of the WHFR radio studios. After lunch, each school gave a short presentation about their radio station. WBFH Operations Manager Robyn Berkowitz and AOM/Music Director Marissa Boyajian gave the Biff presentation highlighted by a video about the station done by Daniel Muskovitz. After several small group sessions, the students moved to the auditorium to hear a panel of speakers including Detroit Tigers Announcer Dan Dickerson, Metro Traffic Reporter Rhonda Hart, Air Personality Gerald McBride, and WWJ Assistant News Director Rob Davidek.

Before going to the conference, the staff went to the Fisher Building to tour two radio stations, WDRQ 93.1 and WDVD 96.3. The students were able to see where Jay Towers does his morning show and got to do a live shout-out over the air. They also got a close-up look at WDRQ’s state-of-the-art production studio.

Other WBFH students attending the conference where Stephanie Krawiec, Marcellus Long, Brad Lutz, Ben Raphelson, Alex Rusciano, Kristin Sparschu, and Roy Wibel. Biff managers attending were Pete Bowers, Randy Carr and Ron Wittebols.

The Biff Buzz
(or news about the Radio Station)

Bloomfield Hills’community radio station, The Biff, started the school year off with another live broadcast from the Woodward Dream Cruise on August 21st. This year the station was broadcasting in front of Bennigan’s at the corner of Square Lake Road and Woodward Avenue, the former site of the famed Ted’s restaurant. Nine WBFH staff students took turns interviewing “cruisers” in their cars as they burned rubber in front of the Biff broadcast booth. Those participating in the broadcast this year were Valenta Bedford, Stephen Curtis, Matt Dlugokinski, Ryan Fishman, Erin Kashawlic, Marco Myerson, Jake Neher, Kristin Sparschu and George Tunis. Playing the oldies and engineering the remote broadcast were the WBFH management team of Pete Bowers, Randy Carr and Ron Wittebols.

WBFH tied for the High School Station of the Year from the Michigan Association of Broadcasters Foundation last March. This fall there are 14 WBFH staff students and 35 Fundamentals of Radio Broadcasting students. Other staff students not previously mentioned include Nick Gallick, Brent Hatchett, Miles Roquemore, Antoine Terrell and Roy Wibel.

You can hear Oakland County’s best music variety twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week at 88.1 on your FM dial. You can also hear The Biff online through its website, www.wbfh.fm. ‘Somewhere in Time’ goes metro-wide

The locally produced syndicated nostalgic radio show Somewhere in Time is going metro-wide. It’s now heard in the Detroit metropolitan area on WMUZ (103.5) FM at 6 p.m. on Sundays. The show is carried locally at 5 p.m. on Sundays on the Bloomfield Hills Schools Community radio station, WBFH (88.1) FM.

Hosted by Bloomfield Township resident Tom Wilson, the shows feature Big Band music and trivia from the ’30s to the ’50s.

Appearing also on the shows are former Andover High graduates Sarah Swanson and Alison Harris.

Alison also hosts another SIT production, Make Believe Ballroom the bands of today, playing the music of Yesterday which is carried on WBFH on Saturdays at 4 p.m.

Wilson, a Bloomfield Hills Attorney, started his career in radio in his high school days as a “platter pusher” on John Lord Booth’s original FM station, W49D (known now as WJLB FM). “It’s strange,” observed Wilson, “I’m playing the same music now, that I played 60 years ago. What goes around, does come around. CD’s have replaced the 78s, but the music is the same.”

The Feb. 6, premier show on WMUZ will be a retrospective look at the Millions Sellers of Glenn Miller hosted by Tom and Alison. WMUZ (103.5) FM at 6 p.m.

Scoring admittance to a prestigious event such as the North American International Auto Show is quite the accomplishment. Sure, members of the working media usually make the invite list, but a high school radio station? Forget about it. They’re just kids, right? Well, no. Not, Ryan Fishman and Wade Fink; they’re the most aggressive members on staff and when they want to cover an event for their listeners, they get motivated.

Fishman and Fink made the appropriate phone calls to the NAIAS media department hoping to gain permission to cover the event from the floor of Cobo Hall; and they did! It was the first time The Biff had ever received media passes for a Detroit tradition.
