Biffstock 2021

The tools of the day: a coin jar and the broadcast log.

It Was a Record-Setting Haul!

Over $5,400 Raised

When the broadcast event kicked off at 7:00 a.m., on Wednesday, May 19, not many on staff were expecting much. After all, most of the community was still affected by the uncertainty of the pandemic and quite frankly, money was tight.

However, since most of the country was leaning toward slowly opening up to some sort of normalcy, Station Advisor Danielle Tier suggested that perhaps the timing was right to resume the WBFH springtime tradition of Biffstock.

After some discussion, and the realization that the main component of the campaign—the live talent show/stage show—would be difficult to produce amid the social distancing requirements of the District, the staff decided to go ahead and produce an event.

Under the direction of Student General Manager Evan Katz, a list of previous donors was compiled and assigned to the rest of the staffers. They fanned out and contacted local businesses in the hope of landing some donations.

Although the door-to-door knock effort left something to be desired, a few businesses came through to offer gift cards and monetary donations. The majority of the pledges came through GoFundMe, social media requests and word-of-mouth; that was the surprising part. By midnight, the staff had met its goal.

Jeff Lawson (Andover ’95) generously offered to match donations dollar-for-dollar. That put this year’s effort into the record books.

Emma Coden is masked-up and ready to start asking for pledges during the 5:00 p.m. shift.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the studio, Harlan Goldman and Garrett Kirshner are waiting for a song to play out before going on the air.

About 20 minutes into their shift, Harlan, Garrett and Emma get a visit from Principal Charlie Hollerith as School Board President Paul Kolin looks on.
Emma Coden and Amanda Silverstone hold down the 9:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. shift. They just completed a radio tour of the allegedly haunted G wing and saw no ghosts.
Just after 11:00 p.m., Jack Meyer, Cole Bewick and Andrew Zupancic are ready to entertain the nighttime listeners. WBFH streams through the internet, so there is no telling who may be listening.

The school is eerily quiet after hours. Staffers loved broadcasting through the night.

At one point in the day, all four studios were pressed into service as all staffers clammoured to be on the air. Here, Garret Kirshner (left) and Harlan Goldman join in from Studio B.
Earlier in the night, School Board President Paul Kolin said he would show up for the 3:00 a.m. shift. Sure enough, he did!
